A successful journey to college requires some preplanning. Below is a ninth grade checklist of things to do in order to prepare for college. Check off those things that you have done successfully.


  • Work through College Grazing to “jump start” your college thinking.
  • Talk to your school counselor about college planning.
  • Take classes that are challenging: English, mathematics, science, history, geography, a foreign language, government, civics, economics, and the arts
  • Explore different career possibilities. Talk to various adults about their work—what they like and dislike. Check out the career search links in the menu "College Resources."
  • Start saving for college. Talk to your parents about college costs. To understand more about college financing, explore the finance links listed in menu "College Resources."
  • Talk to friends and relatives about their experiences in college.
  • Discuss your career and college goals with your parents.
  • Do some reading about the benefits of going to college. Begin with Preparing for College (US Department of Education). Work on developing your study skills. Getting Ready for College provides some helpful tips for success.
